E. coli O157:H7 Outbreak Linked To Prepackaged Cookie Dough

Nestlé USA’s Baking Division has recalled prepackaged Toll House cookie dough, because the products may be contaminated with the foodborne pathogen E. coli O157:H7.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 70 case of E. coli O157:H7 infection have been reported nationwide.  Thirty of those sickened have required hospitalization, and 7 developed a serious complication of E. coli infection known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

Public Health Investigation Of The Outbreak

State public health officials have compared foods eaten by the E. coli outbreak victims, in the days leading up to their illnesses, to foods eaten by a group of people reporting other illnesses.  Results showed a strong association between eating Nestlé Toll House cookie dough and E. coli infection.  More simply put, most of the E. coli outbreak victims reported eating Nestlé Toll House cookie dough.

Following are the number of E. coli cases reported per state as of June 23, 2009: Arizona (2), California (3), Colorado (5), Connecticut (1), Delaware (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Iowa (2), Illinois (5), Kentucky (3), Massachusetts (4), Maryland (2), Maine (3), Minnesota (6), Missouri (2), Montana (1), North Carolina (2), New Hampshire (2), New Jersey (1), Nevada (2), Ohio (3), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (2), South Carolina (1), Texas (3), Utah (2), Virginia (2), Washington (5), and Wisconsin (1).  These numbers are likely to increase.

E. coli Symptoms

Symptoms of E. coli infection may include severe abdominal cramps, fever, and watery diarrhea. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration. Severe infections can cause kidney failure.
