E. coli Food Poisoning Prompts Recall Of Valley Meats Ground Beef Products

Valley Meats, LLC, Coal Valley, Illinois, has recalled approximately 95,898 pounds of ground beef products after an investigation of E. coli O157:H7 infections in Ohio; linked the company’s products to the reported illnesses.  Illinois and Pennsylvania have also reported cases of E. coli O157:H7 infection linked to the outbreak.  The number outbreak illnesses has not been reported.

Ground Beef Affected By The Recall

The recalled ground beef products were produced by Valley Meats on March 10, 2009, and distributed nationwide.  The recalled meat was sold under the brand names of 3S, Grillmaster, J & B, Klub, Thick 'N Savory, and Ultimate.  The products were sold in 10 pound or lager packages, and each product bears the establishment number "EST. 5712" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

E. coli Symptoms

E. coli O157:H7 infections can be fatal.  Symptoms of infection may include severe abdominal cramps, fever, and watery diarrhea. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration. Severe infections can cause kidney failure. The very young, elderly, and immunocompromised are at greatest risk for experiencing complications due to E. coli infection.
