E. coli Food Poisoning Outbreak Prompts Recall Of JBS Swift Beef Products

On June 24 and 28, 2009, JBS Swift Beef Company, Greeley, Colorado, recalled approximately 400,000 pounds of beef products because the beef may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.  An investigation of 23 E. coli O157:H7 infections, in multiple states, linked JBS Swift products to the reported illnesses.

As of July 1, 2009, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 23 cases of E. coli O157:H7 infection linked to the JBS Swift E. coli outbreak in the following nine states: California (4), Maine (1), Michigan (6), Minnesota (1), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (2), New Mexico (1), New York (1) and Wisconsin (6).  More cases are likely to be confirmed.

Most persons sickened in the outbreak reported eating ground beef, and ground beef with the E. coli outbreak strain was obtained from the home of one of the victims.  The CDC also stated that the reported illnesses occurred between April 2, 2009, and June 13, 2009.  Two patients developed a type of kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious complication of E. coli O157:H7.

Because beef products are often frozen for consumption at a later date, consumers are still at risk, and should check their freezers for the recalled products.

Beef Affected By The JBS Swift Recall

The recalled JBS beef products were produced on April 21, 2009 and April 22, 2009 and distributed nationally and internationally.  Each box bears the establishment number “EST. 969” inside the USDA mark of inspection as well as the identifying package date of “042109” or “042209” and a time stamp ranging from “0618” to “1130.”  Since the products were shipped to other companies and retail stores for further processing, it is likely that consumers will not be able find the establishment number “EST. 969” on the packaging.

At this point, a comprehensive list of the meat processing and retail companies who purchased JBS Swift Beef for repackaging under their own company labels is not available to the public.  Various companies have identified their products as having used beef that originated from JBS Swift and have issued their own recalls.

Following, is a partial list of the companies affected by the recall with links to their product recall information:

BJ’s Wholesale Club, Bloom and Food Lion, CostCo Food 4 Less, Frye’s StoresHEB, Hannaford Bros., Kroger, Price Chopper, Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc.Smiths Foods and Drug Stores, Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, Sweetbay Supermarket and WinCo Foods, LLC stores.

Please check FDA/USDA Recalls [http://www.recalls.gov/food.html] for the original recall notices and for recall updates.
